This warm and cozy Ginger Tea, made with fresh root of gingers, is a traditional refreshing drink that helps you have a bright start to your day! If you are looking for a natural remedy for acid reflux or heartburn, this recipe of Ginger tea made in two ways, is surely your best option!

ginger tea for relief in acid reflux with lemon

Ginger Tea is a popular Indian beverage made by steeping fresh or dried ginger root in hot water. Me and Ginger tea go back several years. Ever since I may remember, our remedy for cold, cough and digestive issues had always been a hot and soothing Ginger Tea.

This recipe include two versions of Ginger Tea- one with water (No Milk), which is Lemon Ginger Tea and is flavored with lemon juice and the other is made with milk and water, which is Indian Ginger Tea. If you are having digestive issues like heartburn or acid reflux, I would recommend having Ginger tea without milk. For cold and cough, ginger tea with little milk is a definitely a good idea.

Have this aromatic and fresh cup of lemon ginger root tea the first thing in the morning! You may also check Indian Recipe of Tulsi Kadha for Cold and Cough.

    Ingredients

For The Ginger Tea Without Milk (Lemon Ginger Tea)

    • Fresh Ginger Root-Ginger is the star ingredient of this recipe. While one may use dried ginger, I highly recommend using fresh ginger root as it has the perfect medicinal properties to heal from any digestive or cold cough issues you may be facing. The juice that oozes out when you grate the fresh ginger plays the real role in healing.
    • Sugar- Adding little sugar balances the strong taste that comes from ginger and it becomes easy to give it to toddlers or picky eaters. One may add honey or maple syrup as well. Pls note that in Ayurveda, we don't recommend heating honey. So, if you wish to add honey, don't add it in the pan, rather add it just before having tea when its warm.
    • Water-Normal water works well.
    • Lemon Juice-Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a bit acid to this tea and the combination of ginger and lemon juice works well to ward off acidity. Make sure to add just little lemon juice and not too much.
    • Mint Leaves (Optional)- Top the warm healing ginger tea with mint leaves for perfect aroma and flavor!

For The Ginger Tea With Milk

    • Fresh Ginger Root
    • Sugar
    • Milk- Adding little milk with ginger helps heal congestion and cough. I have used single toned milk. Try using low fat milk of any brand. The best ratio for water and milk to make Indian style Tea is 1: ½. One part water and half part milk.
    • Tea Leaves-I have used Tata tea leaves to make this recipe. They are the best brand in India and we love the flavor that comes from these tea leaves. Feel free to use any good and local variety of tea.

    Variations

    • Ginger Honey Black Pepper- The freshly squeezed ginger juice from the root, added to honey and topped with little black pepper has proven to be a perfect home remedy for cough, since ancient times.
    • Add another green- Add Mint leaves to the lemon ginger tea for a refreshing and vibrant healthy drink.
    • Add another spice-Add cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper to Ginger Milk Tea for making an Indian Masala Chai.
    • Chamomile Tea-Make flavorful tea with Chamomile flowers or any other herb to have a green tea.

    Benefits of Ginger Tea

    • Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce irritation and inflammation in the esophagus, which is often a result of acid reflux.
    • Ginger has a soothing effect on sore throat, an upset stomach and relives in any digestive issues.
    • Ginger can help in relieving bloating and gas, which may cause acidity or motion sickness.

It's important to note that while ginger tea may provide relief for some individuals, it may not work for everyone, and it may not be a standalone solution for severe cases of acid reflux. If you have chronic or severe acid reflux, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Additionally, lifestyle and dietary changes, as well as medications, may be necessary to manage acid reflux effectively.

    Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can manifest with various symptoms, which may vary in severity from person to person. Here are some common symptoms of acid reflux:

    • Heartburn: This is a burning sensation or discomfort that typically starts behind the breastbone (sternum) and may radiate up toward the throat. It often occurs after eating or when lying down.
    • Regurgitation: Acidic or bitter-tasting fluid can move up from the stomach into the back of the throat or mouth, often accompanied by a sour or salty taste.
    • Chest Pain: While heartburn is the most common chest discomfort associated with acid reflux, some people may experience chest pain that mimics a heart attack. It's essential to differentiate between acid reflux-related chest pain and cardiac chest pain, as they require different treatments.
    • Difficulty Swallowing: Acid reflux can cause a sensation of food or liquid sticking in the throat or chest, making swallowing uncomfortable or painful.
    • Bloating and Belching: Some individuals with acid reflux may experience excessive bloating and frequent belching, often due to increased gas production in the stomach.
    • Nausea and Vomiting: While less common, acid reflux can occasionally lead to nausea and even vomiting.

    Expert Tips

    • For making tea with milk, make sure to add milk after the water has been boiled with ginger. Adding milk before water has boiled with ginger may spoil the tea if milk curdles.
    • Let the lemon ginger tea be covered for a few minutes (5-10 min) to absorb all the flavor and have it warm.
    • While one may use dried ginger, the best results are seen with freshly grated ginger root.
