Bread Besan Toast is a popular Indian breakfast dish, made with besan batter (gram flour) and fresh bread slices- a simple yet crispy and amazingly delicious Healthy breakfast on the go!
For a busy college day or school lunches, bread breakfast is always a savior. While I enjoy making fresh salad sandwiches, I love Indian breakfasts deeply. Monsoons add another reason to make deep fried poori, bread pakora or onion fritters.
The days when I am looking for a healthier option, I make this quick Bread Besan Toast just like my air fryer onion pakora. This Bread Besan Cheela is an easy and healthy mix of two recipes- Besan Cheela and Bread Pakora. You might also like Pizza Toast in Air fryer or garlic bread air fried.
A mild twist to deep fried bread pakora by toasting the bread soaked with besan batter on a flat iron tawa. It's is my mother-in-law's unique recipe and it's a huge hit in the family!
Team it with cilantro mint chutney or amla chutney for a healthy breakfast!

Ingredients
See the recipe card for exact measurements.
- Bread Slices- I have used the local brand of bread- Atta Bread from Harvest. Feel free to use any good brand.
- Besan (Gram Flour)- is the star ingredient. I have used local brand.
- Indian Spices- Kasoori Methi, Red chili powder, dry mango powder. Feel free to add garam masala.
- Sesame Oil- I love making these toasts in sesame oil. Ghee, sesame oil, olive oil, or any vegetable oil works best.
- Green chilies- Freshly chopped green chilies work best. Adjust the heat as it may be spicy for you.
- Water- For Making the besan batter
Variations: You may add chopped onions, cilantro leaves, carrots, beans or any vegetable to make it a veggie besan toast.
How To Make Bread Besan Toast
Step 1. Prepare the batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine besan with spices, and salt. Gradually add water and whisk to form a smooth, thick batter similar to pancake batter. Once the batter is ready, add chopped chillies and mix well.
Note: If you wish to add finely chopped veggies, add after the batter is ready at this step.
Step 2. Heat Tawa and Prep The Bread Coating
Place a flat iron tawa (griddle) on medium heat and drizzle a small amount of oil or ghee on it. Spread the oil evenly across the surface of the tawa to prevent sticking.
Take a slice of bread and dip it into the prepared besan batter, making sure to coat both sides evenly. Let any excess batter drip off before placing the bread on the hot tawa.
Note: Make sure that the Tawa is hot or else the bread would stick to the tawa. Flip bread immediately and don't soak it long in besan batter or it will break
Step 3. Cook the toast
Place the batter-coated bread slice on the tawa. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Add a little more oil or ghee around edges. Cover with a lid for perfect cooking. It takes about 5 minutes to cook from both sides.
Repeat the same process for the remaining slices of bread, adding more oil or ghee to the tawa as needed to maintain a good cooking surface.
Note: You may clean tawa with raw onion in between the swaps.
Step 4. Serve hot
Serve the hot and crispy Bread Bean Toast immediately with green chutney, ketchup and a hot cup of tea.
Expert Tips
- The batter should not be very thick or very thin. A medium consistency works well. The thick batter might result in uncooked portions of besan. The thin batter would be a bit runny to place on tawa. The not-so-thick is the best option.
- Make sure to cover the tawa with lid for perfect cooking.
- The Tawa should be hot and not warm or else the bread toast would stick to it.
- I don't recommend using any non-stick tawa as iron tawa is the best. Have been making all sorts of dosa, cheela using it for 2 decades.
