A chutney sandwich is a simple yet delicious cold sandwich full of tangy, sweet, spicy flavors from the two chutneys used to make it- Green Cilantro-Mint Chutney and Tomato Ketchup. With just 3 main ingredients, this recipe is a perfect appetizer for any day.

Inspired by the Bombay Sandwich of India, this recipe of chutney sandwich, also called Tiranga Sandwich has 3 colors- One from Butter white/ mild cream, Orange from Tomato Chutney or Ketchup, and Green from Coriander chutney, just like the tricolors of the Indian flag.
These amazing sandwiches are a burst of flavors and a mild twist to the Bombay Veg sandwich as I have not included any veggies and just the layers of different chutneys along with butter. Feel free to add fresh veggies as a layer.
A no-cook recipe that can be made ahead of time, this Indian vegetarian sandwich is my favorite lunch-box recipe for my daughter.
Team it with Masala Chai on a rainy day for a perfect appetizer!

Ingredients
You may procure the chutneys from Indian stores or find the recipe link for homemade green chutney.
- Fresh Bread Slices- You may use white bread or wholegrain breads. I have used the local brand of Harvest Atta Bread.
- Cilantro Mint Chutney- Green chutney is the star ingredient. Find the green chutney recipe. Make the chutney in advance. The consistency of the chutney should be thick and not runny so that it can be spread easily.
- Tomato Ketchup- I have used store-bought Kissan Tomato ketchup.
- Butter- Any local brand works well. I have used a generous amount of butter for the best taste. Make sure to keep butter at room temperature to spread it easily.
You may use cheese or cream cheese to make it a cheese sandwich. Although, I recommend making one without cheese to enjoy the real flavor of chutneys.
How To Make Chutney Sandwich
Step 1. Assemble all the ingredients
Gather bread slices, your choice of chutney
If you want to add fresh veggies- cucumber slices, tomato, onion, mashed potato, or paneer, and seasonings like chaat masala, cumin powder, kala namak, or black pepper.
Step 2. Apply Butter and Chutney
Lay out the bread slices on a clean surface and spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice.
Spread a generous layer of the green chutney on the second slice of bread. Place it on the top of the first slice to make a pair. On the top of this pair, apply tomato ketchup. Place another slice that has butter, and put it over this pair. It makes a tri-slice sandwich or Tiranga sandwich.
Step 3. Cut and serve
Use a sharp knife to cut the sandwiches diagonally or into desired shapes. Arrange them on a plate and serve immediately as a snack or light meal. Enjoy your delicious chutney sandwiches!
Expert Tips
