Mashed Potatoes Sandwich, made in an Indian style- an Aloo sandwich with crunchy red onions and basic spices. Team it with coriander chutney or tomato ketchup for a quick breakfast!

    mashed potatoes sandwich aloo sandwich

The Mashed Potato Sandwich, or the Indian Aloo Sandwich is made with creamy mashed potatoes leftover or freshly boiled and seasoned with spices like cumin, black pepper, red chili powder, and garam masala.

Since this is made in Indian style, it doesn't include any cream cheese or cheddar cheese. Feel Free to experiment with the cheese.

I had leftover boiled potatoes lying in the refrigerator and since my daughter loves potato sandwiches, I made these for her. Slices of bread stuffed with aloo masala and cooked over slow flame using iron tawa help you create a crusty golden brown sandwich.

A perfect easy breakfast or lunch box recipe for kids!

    Ingredients

    • Bread Slices- Any good brand of bread works well. I have used atta bread from a local brand. You may use white bread or homemade bread too.
    • Boiled Potatoes- I have used leftover boiled potatoes. If you are making this sandwich from scratch, you may boil potatoes in a pressure cooker. Boil for 2 whistles on full and cook on slow flame for about 5-8 min.
    • Spices and Salt- I have used basic Indian spices- cumin seeds (can use cumin powder), Green chilies (adjust the heat), red chili powder, raw mango powder, or lemon juice.
    • Red Onions- I love crunchy onions in any sandwich. You may add green onions and grated cheese too.
    • Green Chutney as a dip.
    • Butter- I have used salted butter from the Amul brand. Feel free to use unsalted butter.

    How To Make Potato Sandwich

    Step 1 Make Aloo Masala

In a large bowl, add boiled potatoes. Use a potato masher or fork to mash the potatoes. You may grate them too.

Add chopped onions, green chilies, and salt and spices. Mix well.

    Step 2 Prepare Aloo Sandwich

On a single slice of bread, spread the potato mixture uniformly. Place another slice of bread on top of it.

Note: If you are a cheese fan, add grated mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, or cheese slice at this step and cook till it melts.

Place this sandwich on a hot iron tawa (season it with oil or butter). Apply butter to the sandwich. Flip it and cook from both sides. Let it cook on slow flame for a crispy texture. It takes about 2-3 minutes to cook one pair of sandwiches.

    Expert Tips

    • If you are using freshly boiled potatoes, it would be easy to mash them with a fork. For already boiled potatoes, take them out 15 min before making the sandwich.
    • Make sure to season the iron tawa with ghee or oil for the perfect brown crispy sandwich.
    • Wipe clean the tawa with a kitchen clothe or raw onion for the next sandwich.

    Storage Suggestions

The leftover Aloo Masala (potato mixture) can be stored in an airtight container with lid (after it cools off) in the refrigerator for about 2 days.

The leftover sandwich can be stored at room temperature and be consumed the same day.

I don't recommend freezing the potato mixture as it would affect the texture.

    Recipe FAQs

What does Gordon Ramsay put in his mashed potatoes?

Gordon Ramsay's mashed potatoes often feature Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes mashed with generous amounts of butter and cream for richness and flavor, seasoned with salt, pepper, and sometimes garlic, and finished with a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

Is mashed potatoes a healthy meal?

Mashed potatoes can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation, but they're primarily a starchy side dish, so pairing them with protein and veggies creates a more balanced meal.

Not at all. But yes, this is a typical Indian-style Aloo Sandwich and is not loaded with cheese or mayonnaise like you might be used to watching on Insta or FB these days.
